dawn of the living... room

Here's my living room... getting closer to finishing (if that's ever really possible).

I haven't painted the walls yet. It's no longer going to be Shrimp Cocktail Pink. Now it's Silk Thread, a kinder, gentler pink.

Vintage barkcloth drapes- $40 for two panels.
Linen sheers (Pottery Barn Kids)- $5.99 for 2 panels @ Value Village

Coffee table drawer hides the "clickers".

$5 fawn with Dinah Shore & 2 June Allison Whitman paper dolls.

L.A. Funeral Home fan & Japanese ribbon lanterns in an old brass candle holder.

Roy Rogers (Whitman), white & gold Dopey ($3.99 @ VV), Hawaiian chalkware, vintage pics of unknown kids & vintage candy dish ($3.99 @ VV).

Vintage solid metal Cowboy Lamp ($40.00) with "wool" Fawn.

Ceramic pooch ($9.99 @ VV) with Santa light ($1.99 @ VV).

I know it's a BIG NO NO but I've had this teak table ($5 @ a garage sale) for over 15 years and I felt the need to paint it. SOOOOOO good. Never looked better. Slick.

Found this corner shelf for $12.00 at a flea market. Painted it. Looks awesome.
LOVE the clock! Gift from a friend.

Big lamp from 1947 (Garage sale find for only $20.00). Must find a vintage shade.

CD box sets & vintage kid's books hanging out in my beloved Deco cabinet ($275.00 @ Red Indian).

This set of bamboo chairs was a steal for $150.00. I re-strung the seat straps and covered the navy/wheat patterned cushions with cute ol' barkcloth.

My Cosmo-Pink Sony Bravia TV sits on a heavy two-drawer bedside table found on the street. I painted it yellow with blue legs (it was originally dark dark dry wood).

This FREE end-table was originally a neglected water-stained, blond wood veneered mess. But the shape was supreme so I sanded it & painted it a fierce coral colour. So happy with the results.

Vintage coral couch & chair were a bit sun faded in areas but the bones were good & solid. Didn't attach the previous owner's IKEA legs (ughhhh). I'll have to find some vintage ones. Found on Craigslist... $250.00 for the pair. Barkclothed the seats and added various cushions and a throw. Can't wait for cozy winter nights!

doilies, an ornamental mat

My late Aunt Audrey is my home decorating inspiration (more on her in the future). The woman had homemade doilies everywhere (made by her & various friends) in her aluminum siding farm house in Belmont Manitoba. When I moved to my new place I took out my Audrey inherited doilies & Value Village ones... and put them EVERYWHERE!!! Just like her!!! I adore them. They make ceramics seem as if they're light & happy on their magic carpet of spiderweb-like snowflakes (made by innumerable grannies of the world). LOVES a Doily.

the new place

I've moved in to my new place and I'm loving it. Has a laid back cottage feel.
Old front porch with a big Smoke Bush billowing in the breeze (a little bit of magic).
Here are a few pics of what I've done so far. The bathroom is done. The office is done.
The living room is getting pretty fucking good, let me tell you. The fireplace mantle was delivered today... and the pink vintage atomic sofa & chair will be delivered next week! Here are some pics. I'll send more soon with more descriptions of my cheapy von cheap decorating ideas. Home Sweet Home, indeed.

Entrance staircase crammed with vintage images & family photos.

The bathroom is small and got a bad 80's tile reno but I worked with it and it's solidly cute.

Here's my awesomely cozy new office, crammed with the things I love (and painted Easy-Bake Oven Blue). I can watch people stroll by as I work... various cats, raccoons & squirrels walk on the porch roof (my cats Joe & Kiki love running in and out).

Here's the living room so far. Haven't painted it yet.

a song for sal

This version of "The Man I Love" is by American actor, musician, adult film maker & star Zebedy Colt (real name: Edward Earle Marsh).
From Wikipedia: "Born in California, Marsh began his career as a child actor in Hollywood, in the late sixties he became an innovator of ‘queer cabaret’ when he recorded the early gay album “I’ll Sing For You” with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. This was the first time he used the ‘Zebedy Colt’ name. Controversial in its day, the album consisted of original gay themed compositions (credited to his real name) and songs originally meant to be sung by women (e.g. George Gershwin’s “The Man I Love”), but given a homosexual twist by being covered by a man." Just perfect for our Sal!

the decorator starring bette davis & mary wickes (via fabulon)

Saw this on Fabulon months ago... AMAZING!!!
A 1965 unaired pilot from producer Aaron Spelling (Charlie's Angels & Dynasty) & writer Mart Crowley (Boys In The Band). Davis is hilarious. Practically a quarter of a century before Designing Women. Why wasn't this a series?!! Awesome

13 beatrice, the way it was

I move on August 31st... got rid of some furniture, dishes & knick knacks (you put it on the street and people take it). I'm living in boxes. Boring. I share with you these images of my space before the packing. It was cute... but the new place will be WAAAYYYY cuter.

You know, the landlord never let me paint... luckily the golden coloured walls made the vintage stuff look good. But I've always preferred the kindness of cool colours.
My new living room & kitchen will be Shrimp Cocktail Pink...YESSSSSSS!!!
